Online Radio

This Washington Post article discusses the issues radio is having, the biggest of which are with online radio. According to the article, other problems include the number of women and minorities in the industry and protection of community radio. Online, there have been battles over whether the stations should pay royalties and if so, how much. There are several proposals going through Congress on royalties. Some stations say that the royalties proposed will put them and their independent artists out of business. For those stations I believe royalties should not be imposed since they’re playing small, independent artists who probably need exposure. If the artists are truly independent and have no label, then I royalties should not be imposed. I agree however that if they play mainstream music with copyrights, they need to pay some money.
I’ve never listened to online radio and I don’t see why it’s popular. The main time I listen to the radio is in the car because I don’t have a CD player or iPod compatibility. According to the textbook, the major time people listen to the radio is when commuting, so I’m not alone in this. Until cars have Internet, which I understand is happening, I don’t think it will have the same popularity as terrestrial radio. I think one plus to online radio is that now that it is free, they have the chance to expose musicians that are not popular yet. However, I don’t see the point of stations that simply play Top 40 hits like normal radio stations. It is interesting to see how radio is changing so much with the introduction of computers, Internet, and other technologies.

१०० Greatest Films

The American Film Institute created a list of the 100 greatest films. The top ten are listed in the book and the entire list is online. Of the top ten, I have seen six. Two of my favorite movies, Rear Window and Silence of the Lambs, made the list at number 42 and 65. The reason I believe so many of these movies are considered great is their timelessness. The reason I love older movies is because they are better made than most today and are still relatable. Many older films can be set in the past but have characters or plot lines that are still significant years later or have the ability to evoke emotions like sadness or fear long after the period they are set it. To me, those things make a good movie. Casablanca made me cry when Ilsa leaves Rick as much as The Notebook did when Allie leaves Noah. Rear Window had more suspense than any of the horror movies today. Some of the movies on the list I did not like however. I had to watch Yankee Doodle Dandy for a film study class and hated it. I can’t imagine many people, especially people my age, watching and enjoying movies like this. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves I think only got a place because it was the first animated film. Although the technology was impressive, the film itself was not great. It definitely was not better than another animated film on the list, Fantasia, which fell nine spots lower on the list. Overall, it is interesting to look over the list and see how many legendary and important films there have been in the last 100 years.

Magazines

Consumer Magazine: Cosmopolitan
Hearst Magazines publishes Cosmopolitan. The subscribers would be young women since the articles discuss issues and points of interest for women such as fashion and dating. It also covers more serious topics like date rape and abduction, which attracts even more young women that may not read the magazine without these types of articles. Advertisers for Cosmopolitan are heavily make up companies like Covergirl and Maybelline. There are also lots of ads for hair products like dyes and shampoos. Most issues of Cosmopolitan are filled with perfume and cologne ads and samples as well. Although there are less, most issues have ads for clothing stores like H&M and Macy’s. The advertisers are mostly for woman’s products because women are looking at the magazine. They do put in occasional men’s cologne because women often decide on or buy cologne for their boyfriends, husbands, and relatives. Cross promotion in movies and television shows directed at women would help promote Cosmopolitan. They also have a website and radio show discussing similar topics as the magazine for promotion. Single copies can be found at most places magazines are, such as bookstores, newsstands, and grocery stores.

Trade Magazine: Pork Magazine
Vance Publishing Corporation publishes Pork Magazine. The subscribers are professional pork producers such as farmers. The magazine is made specifically for these people and most people out of the pork industry wouldn’t be interested in the topics discussed. Advertisers in the magazine are usually products for farms and farmers because that is what the readers would be interested in. Pork Magazine has a website for promotion. It is also well known in the industry by farmers, which helps promote it. Single copies are harder to find than they are for a consumer magazine and most sales are done by subscription. However, they can be found in grocery stores and gas stations in more rural areas where the readers live.

Public Relations Magazine: Minnesota Magazine
The University of Minnesota Alumni Association publishes this magazine. It has no single copy sales and is strictly mailed out to alumni of the university. The audience is alumni of the U of M and it covers topics such as other alumni, sports, and research from the university. Advertisers in the magazine would be trying to target educated adults. I’m not sure exactly who would advertise in the magazine but I would assume travel companies, bookstores, and other publications would be the types of advertisers attracted to this magazine. There is not a lot of promotion behind the magazine because members of the alumni association get it sent in the mail to them whether they want it or not, however the U of M website does have a section dedicated to it.

Miscellaneous Magazine: Journal of Small Business Management.
Blackwell Publishing publishes Journal of Small Business Management. Its audience is small business owners and scholarly research on the topic is published in the magazine. Again, I do not know who advertises in the magazine, but they would want to reach a well-educated, small business owner. Single copies of Journal of Small Business Management would most likely be in libraries and some bookstores. These types of journals are almost required reading for small business owners, so promotion is not a huge factor in sales.
